Finance guru: Celtic accelerating transfer plans as '£17m' jackpot imminent

Celtic can accelerate their transfer plans as they are all but certain to land a £17million-plus windfall from Champions League qualification.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Hoops’ recruitment strategy for the upcoming window.

As relayed by BBC Sport yesterday (4 May), Russian clubs have been banned from Uefa competitions in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

This guarantees the winners of this season’s Scottish Premiership a spot in the Champions League proper without having to go through the playoffs.

Celtic are six points clear at the top of the league with just five games to play.

Europe’s premier competition is lucrative for the likes of Celtic, with prize money, coefficient cash, TV revenue and ticket sales all providing a boost.

And Plumley explains that the guaranteed entry fee alone means Celtic can begin formulating their transfer plans accordingly.

“If you base it on the prize money, each club gets just over £13m,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“You then have win bonuses, which are £2.4m for a win and just under £1m for a draw. So around £17m is what you’re looking at the very least.

“If you go straight into the group stage, you know you have that extra money to play with.

“Celtic do generate good revenue for where they are in that league. If you add another £17m on top, it becomes even more significant.

In terms of future planning, you can target transfers accordingly because there is no jeopardy. You know you’re going to be there come September.

Celtic were knocked out by Midtjylland in the first qualifying round of the Champions League this term.

Next up for Ange Postecoglou’s side is a clash against 3rd-place Hearts on Saturday (7 May).
