Celtic handed 'unbelievable' boost v Rangers after 'brilliant' news - McAvennie

Frank McAvennie insists Celtic have been given an advantage ahead of their Old Firm clash against Rangers next month.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as it was announced fans will be in attendance for the February clash.

On Tuesday (11 January), Nicola Sturgeon announced capacity crowds can return in Scotland when the Premiership resumes later this month.

It was previously suggested that only 500 fans would be allowed to attend each game amid a rise in Covid cases through the winter.

McAvennie had been concerned about Celtic playing February’s Old Firm game without a full house and he has admitted he is “delighted” with the news.

“Brilliant news, I’m delighted the fans will be back in,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“There is nothing better than a full stadium, those Celtic fans are absolutely unbelievable.

“I know what it’s like to play in front of that crowd and let me tell you, it will give the boys such a boost on derby day.

“Players play better, you are given an extra edge. One thing I can say about the fans, for sure, is they are so good.

“They have stuck with the club through all this turmoil and hopefully they get to witness a win over Rangers in a few weeks.

“The game should not be played behind closed doors or with just 500 fans.

“That’s not football. So on one level, I am happy the fans are back for the good of the game.

“On another level it should give us the edge in a must-win game.”

Celtic face Rangers at Parkhead on 2 February.

The Gers are six points ahead of the Hoops as it stands.
