Celtic have moved to sign 'next Fraser Forster' as transfer talks revealed - McLeish
Celtic could sign another goalkeeping “star” in Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman, according to Alex McLeish.
The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the shot-stopper could emulate former Hoops star Fraser Forster at Parkhead.
As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic have enquired about a potential deal for Woodman, 24, while in talks with Newcastle.
It is understood the two clubs are in discussions over a move for defender Kristoffer Ajer but Celtic have asked about the shot-stopper.
Woodman has a contract until 2023 and Newcastle would rather sanction a loan deal than a permanent exit.
Celtic also initially signed former star Forster on loan from the Magpies back in 2010.

McLeish suggested Woodman, who has already had temporary spells in Scotland, could follow in the giant shot-stopper’s boots.
McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “When I think of Woodman, Fraser Forster was the name that immediately sprang to mind. A star was born in Celtic colours. He could be the next Forster.
“Maybe they don’t want to flirt with foreign goalkeepers at the moment. It is difficult for them to come into the league and just to be sensational stars straight away.
“It can take a wee bit of time in terms of language, the speed of the game, and the robustness of the game as well. That’s why maybe they’ve looked at the homegrown guy.
“He’s no stranger to the Scottish League.”
Woodman made 15 appearances for Kilmarnock during a half-season loan back in 2017.
He then turned out eight times for Aberdeen during another temporary spell in 2018.
The goalkeeper made 52 appearances for beaten play-off finalists Swansea throughout the 2020/21 campaign.
He won the Championship golden glove with 20 clean sheets to his name.
