Celtic are joined by Brighton and Aston Villa in the hunt to sign Wigan midfielder Nick Powell, according to a reliable journalist.
Sun journalist Alan Nixon reported on his personal Twitter account on Sunday that Premier League side Brighton are back in the race to sign Powell, 23, with “a vengeance”.
It is understood that Wigan could move to offer Powell a new deal at the DW Stadium though once “they sort out their business.”
Wigan are currently chasing the League One title in England as they aim to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
The Latics are third in the table and six points behind leaders Blackburn, however they have four games in hand after a long run in the FA Cup that has seen them beat the likes of West Ham and Manchester City.
Powell has been in great form for Wigan this season.
The goalscoring midfielder, formerly of Manchester United, has made 32 appearances in all competitions, netting 12 goals and supplying four assists in the process.
Football Insider verdict
Powell has been in great form for Wigan and is easily a player who could find his feet in the English Championship. He obviously learned a lot during his time at Manchester United and the once-highly-rated youngster appears to have finally started to settle down somewhere after a few poor loan spells away from Old Trafford. The Scottish Premiership may be a good place for him to move to next although a team like Aston Villa could be appealing to him. Celtic already have a lot of attacking midfielders and do not really need to sign any more unless some are sold.
In other Celtic news, Brendan Rodgers has dropped a major hint that this 11-assist player could be sold.
