Alex McLeish has warned Celtic could be “burned again” if Eddie Howe brings in his own director of football.

The former Scotland boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Hoops did not want a repeat of when ex-head of recruitment Lee Congerton left to reunite with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City in 2019.

As revealed by Football Insider, Howe verbally agreed to take charge of the Bhoys last week, though nothing is set in stone yet as he has had second thoughts.

The Daily Mail claim the 43-year-old wants Bournemouth’s technical director Richard Hughes to join him at Parkhead.

The Bhoys are currently without a sporting director following Nicky Hammond’s departure earlier this month.

Hammond initially joined as a consultant following Congerton’s exit before taking on the role permanently later in 2019.

McLeish admitted he was surprised to hear Howe is looking to bring in his own man for the senior role.

He warned lightning could strike twice if the pair have a successful spell in Glasgow.

“It is a wee bit unusual to hear that the manager would want to take a sporting director with him,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“To take your sporting director, it’s very new to me and it’s an unusual step.

The next question is if Eddie does brilliant. What if he does a Brendan, has an incredible tenure and gets called up by one of the big teams in England? Does he take Richard with him?

“That would again break the infrastructure of what they have already done at Celtic.

“I remember Lee (Congerton) going with Brendan and they don’t want burned again.”
