One of the most interesting comments made by Brendan Rodgers following Celtic’s 5-0 victory over Brechin was that star striker Moussa Dembele had been left out of the starting line-up as the constant speculation surrounding the player’s future was affecting his form.
It is interesting to speculate if the 21-year-old star player would have been left out if it had been a league game but the comments by the Hoops boss won’t stop the speculation surrounding the player, indeed it will probably lead to more.
If the French under-21 international is unable to play because of the rumours linking the player with other clubs then the Bhoys have a problem, which could quickly develop into a crisis.
It would seem to make sense to sell him between now and the end of the transfer window, provided of course that the Hoops get the right bid in for the player – presumably around £20million – and are able to sign a replacement.
With the Bhoys facing some big matches in the weeks ahead – including the Europa League last 32 clash with Zenit – there’s no point in keeping a player if he doesn’t seem strong enough mentally to play.
Perhaps we will get more indication about Dembele’s future in Glasgow if he doesn’t play against Partick Thistle on Tuesday. If he isn’t involved he could well have already played his last game for Celtic.
