Former Aberdeen chief Keith Wyness has insisted chairman Peter Lawwell and his Celtic board have done "the right thing long-term" despite fan backlash over transfer spending.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Lawwell is a "canny operator" having dealt with him many times during his career.

Celtic’s only permanent signing in January was winger Nicolas Kuhn for a £3million fee - despite the club's 2022-23 financial accounts showing £40million of profit and cash reserves of £67million.

The Hoops are also under pressure from Rangers in the race for the Scottish Premiership title race, with their Old Firm rivals moving two points ahead in recent weeks.

Peter Lawwell has 'done the right thing for Celtic', says Wyness

Football Insider detailed in February the huge fan discontent on social media about the lack of spending - with former Celtic forward Chris Sutton also slamming Lawwell's statement on the issue.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I know Peter, I’ve dealt with him many times on player transfers and I’ve observed how he’s run Celtic.

“They’re very canny operators, and I think they’ve done the right thing long-term for Celtic.

“It’s always nice to have the resources available if you do have to make a big change and a new manager does come in. It’s great to have that luxury.

“They made a judgement at the time, they thought they had spent enough to get success. It hasn’t proved to be the case - but with hindsight, it is easy to say that.

“In football, everything’s 50:50. 50% of fans will hate the decision, 50% of fans will love it - that’s just the way it’s always been.

“The season’s not finished, so we’ve just got to watch this space and see this great soap opera develop.”
