Why Celtic should get rid of this poorly-performing midfielder in January

COMMENT By Will Butcher

Celtic should sell Nir Bitton in the January transfer window if they complete the signing of Kouassi Eboue from Krasnodar.

The BBC revealed that the Ivorian 19-year-old Eboue is set to complete a £2.8million transfer to the Hoops after he arrived in Glasgow to complete a medical.

After being ousted from the Celtic midfield, Bitton has plummeted down the midfield pecking order under Brendan Rodgers behind the likes of captain Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong and Callum McGregor.

Bitton’s poor performances in the Champions League against the likes of Barcelona and most notably Borussia Monchengladbach made up Rodgers’ mind in dropping his number six.

A number of misplaced passes and failure to perform well in a side that was dominating domestic games also saw fans turn their back on the midfielder.

Bitton’s hasn’t replicated his form from last season and it’s time that Celtic let him leave for their sake and the good of his career.

Starting just one game since Celtic’s Betfred Cup semi-final win against Rangers back in October, the 6ft 5in colossus should be sold in January by Rodgers.

If the signing of Eboue goes through, it is likely to see Bitton fall even further down the pecking order – a January sale would prevent his career from stagnating.

Still contracted to the 47-time Scottish champions until the summer of 2020, it remains to be seen how much Rodgers would charge for the midfielder if he were to sell him.

In other Celtic transfer news, former Liverpool and Swansea boss Rodgers has joined the race to sign midfielder.
