Celtic are weighing up a new move to sign Swiss international defender Reto Ziegler after holding talks with him earlier this summer, according to a report.
The Scotsman claim the Scottish giants could make a move for the left-back, who is a free agent following his release from Swiss Super League outfit FC Sion.
Ziegler, 31, did not find a new club during the transfer window but has a wealth of experience at some of Europe’s leading clubs, including Premier League giants Tottenham.
Ziegler revealed in June in an interview with Swiss newspaper Blick that he was in discussions with both Celtic and La Liga side Real Betis after leaving Sion.
“Before I meet with those two clubs, I will also meet with the people who run Sion to find out more,” the defender said to Swiss newspaper Blick. “The offers from Celtic and Betis are an honour for me.”
Celtic have the highly-rated Kieran Tierney as their first choice left-back but are in need of defensive reinforcements as they prepare for a Champions League campaign that begins next week.
Ziegler, who has top flight experience in six different countries, has had spells at Lokomotiv Moscow, Fenerbahce, Sampdoria and Hamburg.
Football Insider verdict:
Ziegler would be an ideal free agent signing. He has experience, pedigree and would solve at a stroke Celtic’s need for top quality defensive reinforcements. Tierney is as good as any Celtic player in his position but Rodgers needs a proven back-up as there is no way the brilliant young left-back can play 65 matches this season. With Emilio Izaguirre no longer at Parkhead, Ziegler represents an ideal replacement.
In other Celtic transfer news, Rangers would storm to the SPL title if they had been successful in their deadline-day pursuit of a £45,000-a-week striker.
