Celtic should re-sign 30-year-old fan favourite for these three reasons

COMMENT By Will Butcher

Brendan Rodgers would please Celtic fans and players alike if he signed out-of-favour Everton winger Aiden McGeady.

The 30-year-old is remembered fondly at Parkhead, after wearing the green and white of the Bhoys strip for six years in which he made 193 appearances.

Scoring 30 goals and providing 49 assists, McGeady should be brought back to Celtic Park and here are three reasons why:

Cheap alternative

Currently way down the pecking order at Goodison Park, McGeady would be allowed to leave in a bargain deal as he continues his loan spell with Championship side Preston.

The winger is behind the likes of Gerard Deulofeu, Yannick Bolasie, Aaron Lennon and Enner Valencia and has just 18 months remaining on his current deal.

With that in mind, a cut-price January offer could tempt Everton to cancel McGeady’s loan at Preston to allow him to be sold permanently.

Losing Roberts

On-loan winger Patrick Roberts loan from Man City is set to expire in the summer, which will have seen him spend 18 months in Glasgow.

However, the Hoops are unlikely to be able to afford the teenager. City bought him for around £10million from Fulham and would want more as his stock continues to rise.

McGeady, then, would prove the perfect replacement as he offers pace, trickery on the ball and a lethal ability from set pieces.

Scottish Premiership experience

The 86-time Ireland international made 144 appearances in the top flight of Scotland during his time in Glasgow, baffling defenders with his dazzling skill from the flanks.

His experience in the Scottish Premiership would provide Celtic with a player who would not need any time to adapt to the pace of the division, as he looks for regular game time.

A return to the Hoops would delight fans, six years after McGeady had left to join Russian giants Spartak Moscow for around £11million.
