Celtic £6m fee on the cards for Jan after PL giants eye 26-year-old - report
Celtic could rake in £6million in extra transfer fee money in January if Southampton sell Virgil van Dijk for their asking price, according to a report.
The Daily Record has claimed that Premier League giants Manchester City are set to battle Liverpool in an attempt to sign Southampton’s former Hoops centre-back van Dijk in January, who is valued at £70million by the Saints.
The Hoops put a sell-on clause of between 10 and 15 per cent when they sold the 26-year-old to Southampton for £13million in 2015.
The centre-half played in Glasgow for two years before moving to the English Premier League, receiving rave reviews and becoming a highly sought-after player.
Liverpool to sign the Netherlands international in the summer and if the transfer fee that van Dijk eventually leaves Southampton for rises to his asking fee of £70million, then a £6million fee could be on the cards to make it’s way into the Parkhead piggy bank.
Football Insider verdict
A bidding war for Southampton ace van Dijk would be great news for Celtic. The extra £6million that the club could receive – if the player leaves Southampton in the January transfer window – could be put to use by Brendan Rodgers in a number of key areas. A new centre-back could be signed for one, and a potential replacement striker for Moussa Dembele if he leaves the Hoops would also top the agenda. The Hoops have already been linked with a few new centre-backs but that is definitely the area that money should be invested in first and foremost.
