Celtic should sign Rodgers favourite from Liverpool to replace Lustig
COMMENT By Emma Sanders
Brendan Rodgers should look to bring in Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan as a long-term replacement for Mikael Lustig.
The 24-year-old is unlikely to have a future in Merseyside so Rodgers should attempt to do business with his former club.
Celtic are expected to strengthen in the January transfer window and one position they should look to improve is the right-back role which is currently being held by Lustig.
The 30-year-old has not had a poor season but he is certainly not one of Rodgers’ strongest players and the Celtic boss should be looking at potential replacements for the future.
Summer signing Christian Gamboa has provided competition but he is yet to demonstrate why he should replace Lustig and, with a large transfer budget available, Rodgers should explore other options.

Flanagan played some of his best football as a full-back under Rodgers, who regarded him as a favourite in the team’s title challenge in 2013-14, and a reunion at Celtic could have some great results as the defender has a number of qualities which would improve the side.
The Merseysider is a strong tackler and has a good reading of the game. He is also happy to provide support in attack and has a great delivery.
Flanagan emerged as one of Liverpool’s most promising academy products when he made his first appearances for the club in 2011 under Kenny Dalglish.
However, he suffered a serious knee injury in 2015 and further set-backs damaged what could have been a potentially bright Liverpool career.
He was deemed surplus to Jurgen Klopp’s plans in the summer and has spent the last six months on loan at Burnley but he has made just six appearances under Sean Dyche.
