Celtic told to bin Mark Lawwell after 'disaster' - expert

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Celtic recruitment chief Mark Lawwell failed in the January transfer window and should not be at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie slaughtered the Lawwell, the son of chairman Peter, for failing to sign a left-back last month.

He was appointed to his current position in May 2022 - a decision that was met with widespread animosity from supporters.

Hoops fans were furious with the lack of action during the January transfer window and made their opinions clear to the board by unfurling banners during their 1-1 draw against Aberdeen on 3 February.

The club signed Nicolas Kuhn and loaned in Norwich City striker Adam Idah, but discontent remains among the fanbase as they feel the squad is far too weak and that the club lacks ambition.

Celtic fans are furious about January and expert is stunned Mark Lawwell is still the recruitment head

McAvennie was baffled that Lawwell was given such an important role at Parkhead and claimed that it would now be "inexcusable" to not win the league.

"I don't think recruitment is Lawwell's forte," he told Football Insider.

"Why would they give him a job doing it?

"No disrespect, but how can he become the head scout?

"Sometimes I think that Celtic just want to keep in front of Rangers, they don't want to progress.

"I would hate to be on the board if they don't win the league this year.

"For me, it would be inexcusable.

"They were desperate for a left-back and they didn't do it, the whole of January was a disaster".
