Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Celtic should prioritise a new number six over Dundee midfielder and potential Matt O'Riley replacement Luke McCowan.

That's the opinion of ex-Celtic frontman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, McAvennie doesn't believe the club needs to bring McCowan, 26, to Celtic Park this transfer window.

According to the Scottish outlet, the Daily Record, McCowan had been lined up for a surprise move to the Scottish champions as a potential replacement for Matt O'Riley.

Luke McCwoan shouldn't be a priority for Celtic

The Glasgow giants are well-stocked in the middle of the park with options such as Paulo Bernardo, Odin Thiago Holm, and Tomoki Iwata.

Iwata is one player who has been touted as potentially filling in the number six position for Celtic.

"I don't know about him (McCowan)", McAvennie told Football Insider

"Kuhn has come in so he's that right-wing option, Matt (O'Riley) is is playing central midfield, further up the park.

"I would still like to see a number six coming in and just holding.

"Scott Brown and the Australian boy Aaron Mooy who both did a good job for the club.

"I was hoping Iwata would be that and I think Brendan (Rodgers) is looking at that because he's a good player.

"He doesn't lose the ball and he doesn't mind putting his foot in so I think he could develop into the player that the club need."
