Alan Hutton has ripped into Celtic goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas after he failed to impress in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers defender admits the new shot-stopper has “massive shoes to fill” after the “outstanding” Fraser Forster left the club this summer.
The 26-year-old failed to stop Rangers defender Connor Goldson from scoring twice as the Bhoys slipped to a derby day defeat at Parkhead.
Barkas arrived at Celtic from AEK Athens for a reported initial fee of £2.95million and he has missed just one game since he joined.
However, Hutton admits he thinks Forster would have managed to stop Rangers’ opening goal and insists that the new shot-stopper is yet to convince.
Asked how much Celtic missed Forster between the sticks, Hutton told Football Insider: “Absolutely huge miss in my opinion. I actually think, if Forster’s in, he saves the header (for the opening goal).
“I think the jury’s still out, I even just think, just looking at him, he’s not that imposing figure that Fraser Forster is, he was one of the main reasons they did so well last season, in my opinion. He’s an outstanding keeper.
“Celtic tried everything to get him back, it didn’t come off and they’ve obviously had to look elsewhere. It’s massive shoes to fill and Barkas is going to be judged on that, his performances are going to be put up against Fraser Forster’s.
“Everyone I know is saying the same thing – that they think he would have got to the header and these are the moments that change games. It’s massive shoes to fill and for me the jury is still out.”
