Celtic vs Rangers ref watch: Three decisions Nick Walsh got wrong, including Hyun-Jun Yang incident

Celtic picked up a vital victory in the Old Firm derby on Sunday as they beat Rangers 3-1 at Celtic Park to go within one point of Hearts at the summit.

It was a fantastic start for Rangers as Mikey Moore pounced on a loose ball inside the box and slotted it into the net just before the 10-minute mark.

This lead would not last long, as Hyun-Jun Yang netted the equaliser midway through the first half after a fantastic Arne Engels cross.

Celtic and Daizen Maeda came to life in the second half, as the striker put the hosts in front just after the break before he netted a simply incredible bicycle kick to make it 3-1 four minutes later as they went on to see out the win.

Below, Football Insider has reviewed Nick Walsh’s performance in what was an entertaining Old Firm derby.

Hyun-Jun Yang’s equaliser should have been disallowed

After Rangers’ opener, it did not take long for Celtic to worm themselves back into the game.

It was a fantastic goal all round from the Hoops, but it should have been disallowed for offside.

It was a close game at Celtic Park

As Yang struck the ball, Benjamin Nygren was clearly impeding the view of Jack Butland in an offside position.

Somehow, Walsh did not spot this to disallow it, and perhaps even more bizarrely, VAR agreed with their decision after a check.

The offside was clear, and why the goal was not disallowed was simply baffling.

Alistair Johnston should have been sent off for Celtic

Late in the first half, both teams were pushing to get ahead before the break, which led to multiple strong challenges.

On such was Alistair Johnston, who slid and won the ball from Mikey Moore in a strong challenge.

Yet, despite winning the ball, he also made strong contact with Moore above his ankle with his studs.

As a result, Walsh gave the full-back a yellow card, but it should have clearly been a red.

This was another strange decision, and VAR should have let the referee take another look at it.

Johnston was baffled by the booking when Walsh handed it out. However, it reality, he is lucky that he remained on the field.

Daizen Maeda unlucky to receive late yellow card

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Maeda could leave Celtic in the summer, and based on this performance, fans will not want him to depart.

The striker was excellent, with his bicycle kick goal likely to be replayed for years to come.

However, the match ended somewhat on a poor note for the attacker as he picked up a late yellow card for a challenge on Djeidi Gassama.

While it was a foul, it was not enough to be a yellow card, with it clearly just being a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge.

Walsh was quite card heavy late on, and this was one that could have been avoided.

And what did Keith Hackett make of Walsh’s overall display?

Hackett was far from impressed with Walsh’s display, and was particularly disappointed with his decision not to disallow Celtic’s equaliser.

He exclusively told Football Insider: “I am surprised that the VAR has allowed this goal to stand. The Celtic player was clearly in an offside position in the line of sight of the goalkeeper.

“The offside law states interfering with an opponent by: preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision.”

He later added: “When considering interfering with play you are looking at the position of the offside player(s) at the point the ball is kicked.

“You can see in my shot how the sight line of the goalkeeper is blocked. It clears only when the Celtic player has moved.”
