Alistair Johnston: Celtic star's seriously impressive stats revealed from Canada draw vs Bosnia
Alistair Johnston was hugely impressive in Canada's World Cup opener on Friday as they drew 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Jovo Lukic scored midway through the first half to put the Europeans ahead and the hosts would have to wait until the final 12 minutes to equalise through Cyle Larin.
Jesse Marsch's team continued to push for a winner, but were ultimately forced to settle for a point and will hope for better results against Qatar and Switzerland.
Johnston spent almost the entirety of the season out injured for Celtic, but showed his importance by returning as the Hoops won their final six games to win the Scottish Premiership.
The defender is expected to be a key part of Canada's hopes of a positive World Cup, too, and he showed why on Friday.
History has already been made with the point being their first in World Cup history, but Marsch will have his sights set on a first win and even an emergence from the group stage.
Alistair Johnston's display vs Bosnia in stats
Johnston is under contract at Celtic until 2029, signing a new contract in 2024 after impressing following his 2023 arrival.
The right-back was signed from MLS club CF Montreal and has been a hugely consistent option for the Hoops, even reportedly attracting Premier League interest.
It has been a tough season of injuries for the 27-year-old, and difficult for Celtic to manage without him, but he has looked to get back to his best almost immediately.
Johnston featured throughout in Canada's opener and flew up and down the wing, creating a chance, completing a successful dribble, winning two free-kicks and making 11 passes into the final third.
The Celtic man's most impressive work came defensively, however. One tackle, four clearances and three recoveries were the standouts, but the right-back also won five of his seven duels.
Celtic must be wary on Johnston interest
Premier League interest in Johnston was there for a reason, and it will not have gone away completely.
With the right-back now back and firing on the World Cup stage, it would not be a shock to see Celtic brace for a bid this summer.
And with the 27-year-old's contract due to expire in 2027, the Hoops at least have strong footing at the negotiation table.
But Johnston is set to be a crucial cog in Martin O'Neill's system, and it will be vitally important that he remains at Celtic Park this summer.
