Celtic defender Auston Trusty was on the scoresheet as the United States were beaten 3-2 by Turkey on Friday.

The 27-year-old's opener was quickly cancelled out by Arda Guler, before Baris Alper Yilmaz and Sebastian Berhalter scored before Kaan Ayhan's 98th-minute winner.

The co-hosts had already secured their place as group D winners, meaning several players were handed their full World Cup debuts.

Trusty was among them, and took his early chance well by touching down Berhalter's corner before thumping past Ugarcan Cakir.

The United States will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, after they were confirmed to have finished third in group B.

Trusty will have to wait to find out if he has impressed enough to start that game, with Antonee Robinson representing his main competition.

United States media mixed on Auston Trusty after display vs Turkey

Friday's game was just Trusty's 10th senior international display for the United States, and it brought his first goal.

The Celtic defender, who is usually deployed in the centre of defence, has been appearing at left-back under Mauricio Pochettino, and looks to have taken to the position.

Against Turkey, he took two shots other than the one that found the net, also attempting a cross and completing eight passes into the final third.

And Trusty did not forget his defensive work, making a tackle, four clearances, three interceptions, three recoveries and winning five duels.

FOX Sports were not massively convinced with his display, however, and gave him just a six out of 10 for a "mixed night".

NBC Sports, however, had a completely different viewing. They rated Trusty's display as an eight out of 10, and wrote that he was a "monstrous left back, marauding forward and leading the game in shot attempts".

Sports Illustrated settled almost in the middle, handing the 27-year-old a 7.5 out of 10 and describing him as "fairly reliable".

Trusty plays down injury scare

What was a momentous occasion for Trusty ultimately ended in disappointment when he was forced off with an ankle injury.

The defender had rolled it badly and was carried off the pitch in the final moments.

However, speaking after the game, he told FOX Sports: "I rolled my ankle pretty bad. I’ll be all right… I heard a little something, but I’ll be fine. No worries.”

That will be music to Celtic fans' ears, who will hope to have Trusty back and firing for pre-season following the World Cup.
