Benjamin Nygren's transfer value sinks by £5m after anonymous Sweden display despite win vs Tunisia
Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren was largely anonymous in Sweden's 5-1 victory over Tunisia.
The 24-year-old started the match behind the strike partnership of Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak, but was substituted off after 65 minutes.
Brighton's Yasin Ayari instead conducted the game from the middle of the park with two goals.
Nygren enjoyed a successful first season at Celtic, and has received admiration from Premier League clubs for his performances in the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic are expected to have to fend off bids for Nygren this summer, but the Hoops would sell if a big offer arrived for the 24-year-old.
However, his opening World Cup display suggests that Nygren could struggle to make the step-up to the Premier League.
Benjamin Nygren outshined in Sweden win
Sweden are only seven places above Tunisia in the FIFA rankings, but there was a gulf in class between the two sides in this clash.
In such a dominant attacking performance from Sweden, Nygren failed to have a shot on goal and created just one chance.
Nygren only had 24 touches of the ball and won a lowly three out of seven duels as he struggled to have an effect on the game.
Celtic will find it difficult to raise Nygren's value to any interested parties if the Swede continues this form during the World Cup.
Our verdict is that Nygren is likely to have lost £5million worth of transfer value with his anonymous performance in Monterrey, Mexico.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Nygren could push to leave Celtic, as interest from the Premier League will be hard to ignore.
Celtic can not afford double transfer blow
La Liga side Valencia had emerged as a leading contender to sign Nygren this summer, alongside a host of interested Premier League clubs.
Celtic have no plans to let Nygren leave, with fellow midfielder Arne Engels looking likely to depart.
Losing both Engels and Nygren in the same transfer window would mean Martin O'Neill would have to replace over 20 goals from his midfield.
That would be a huge blow to a Celtic side who still need to find a reliable striker to replace Kyogo Furuhashi, whilst O'Neill could build his team around Nygren if he was to stay in Glasgow.
