Celtic picked up a vital victory over Aberdeen on Wednesday as they won 2-1.

It was far tenser than many fans would have liked as the Dons gave Martin O’Neill’s side a scare.

Despite their dominant start that saw Kieran Tierney open the scoring, an error from Liam Scales allowed the hosts to win a penalty, which Kevin Nisbet converted.

While the Hoops eventually retook the lead through Benjamin Nygren, fans remained unhappy with their defender.

Scales has made multiple poor games for Celtic this season, and now they believe the defender needs to be sold.

Celtic fans call for Liam Scales to be sold after Aberdeen mistake

Scales has been a regular in Celtic’s lineup this season, but the centre-back has been prone to multiple mistakes.

This happened once again on Wednesday as his error allowed the Dons to equalise from the penalty spot in the first half.

Despite the visitors dominating the opening exchanges, Scales hit Toyosi Olusanya’s calf when attempting to clear the ball, which gave the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

While the decision was soft, contact was clearly made.

As a result, after yet another mistake, Celtic fans have had enough, and called for O’Neill to sell the centre-back after his recent error.

How poor was Scales vs Aberdeen?

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness recently told Football Insider that O’Neill’s brilliance has kept Celtic’s title hopes alive after their draw against Rangers on the weekend.

However, while Scales almost made this comeback redundant, he did have a good match overall against Aberdeen.

According to Fotmob on 4 March, the centre-back made two tackles, five clearances, four recoveries and two interceptions as he prevented the hosts from getting another.

His presence proved to be vital, especially late on, when the Dons were pushing for an equaliser.

However, while his overall defensive display was good, he simply has to iron out his individual errors.

Against a better opponent, such a mistake could have cost Celtic the game and potentially the title.

Therefore, if this continues into the post-split season, it could come to haunt O’Neill’s side.
