Daizen Maeda: Japanese media's reaction to Celtic star's performance vs Netherlands comes as a shock
Daizen Maeda could not take his incredible Celtic form into the first game of the World Cup as Japan drew 2-2 with the Netherlands on Sunday.
The striker scored in seven consecutive games to finish the club season for the Hoops, but was largely anonymous for his nation.
Japan came from behind twice, with Keito Nakamura responding to Virgil van Dijk's opener, before Daichi Kamada scored to cancel out Crysencio Summerville's strike.
Maeda will hope to attract eyes in the coming weeks, with significant doubt hanging over his Celtic future.
The 28-year-old's contract at Parkhead expires next summer, with a decision needing to be made if he does not sign an extension.
The forward has netted 79 goals in 212 games for Celtic and will leave as a legend if he does, but Martin O'Neill will retain hope of convincing him to stay.
Japanese media in high praise for Daizen Maeda's 'strong defensive abilities'
With the dangerous Ayase Ueda occupying the striker's spot, manager Hajime Moriyasu opted to deploy Maeda in a pair behind the striker with Takefusa Kubo.
Immediately it became apparent that the Celtic man was struggling in the deeper position, however.
Throughout his 66 minutes on the pitch, the 28-year-old completed just four passes and failed to get off a single shot.
Maeda is so dangerous in front of goal but he was unable to get anywhere near, taking just three touches in the opposition's penalty area.
And deeper in midfield, the forward failed to complete a successful dribble and won just one of his seven duels.
However, Japanese outlet Football Channel were very impressed by the 28-year-old's press. "From the first half, his runs behind the opposing defensive line were noticeable," they wrote.
"In situations where the team was out of possession, he disrupted the build-up with his characteristic strong defensive abilities.
"His speed in closing down opponents was exceptional, and he repeatedly withstood the opponent's advances with his high-pressing defence."
Maeda has already revealed his summer ambitions
Several clubs are likely looking at Maeda this summer, with the forward representing a strong market opportunity.
Celtic will be unlikely to stand in the Japan international's way if he does request to leave and they will not have much negotiating power, given the player's contract situation.
The 28-year-old has already revealed his ideal move this summer, and it could well come to fruition. Speaking to Japanese publication FootballZone in May, he said: "I want to take the next step and play in the Premier League, which has always been my goal.
"Right now, I’m grateful to Celtic and I’m giving it my all. But I haven’t seen my limits yet. The Premier League is a dream I’ve been talking about since I was a kid.
"Even if it’s just for one year, I want to prove just how far my speed can take me at the highest level in the world."
