Haissem Hassan's World Cup performances analysed after Celtic 'bid' submitted
Haissem Hassan is on Celtic's radar after some strong performances at the World Cup for Egypt.
Celtic need to add some quality to their attacking ranks this summer to stay ahead of Hearts and Rangers in the Premiership title race next season.
Martin O'Neill has confirmed that the club are closing in on signing Camilo Duran, but that will only be the start of their extensive transfer business.
Egypt star Hassan drew worldwide praise for the way he decimated a usually stern Argentina defence in their World Cup round of 16 clash on Tuesday.
Reports in Spain have since claimed that Celtic have seen a £3.5million bid for his services rejected by his club, Real Oviedo, who are holding out for a larger fee.
His showings in North America will be the first time that many fans on these shores have heard of Hassan, so it is worth delving into what has caught the attention of Celtic chiefs.
Haissem Hassan excels on the world stage after being handed Egypt chance
Hassan was born in Paris and became a France youth international at under-17 level, but switched international allegiance to Egypt, the country of his father's birth, in March.
He was part of the side that beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 and drew 0-0 with Spain in the same month, then was called up to the Pharaohs' World Cup squad in May.
Hassan played in both warm-up friendlies against Russia and Brazil, but had to bide his time to make his World Cup bow until the round of 32 stage against Australia last week.
He came on in the 67th minute and made six passes into the final third, took five touches in the opposition box and won two ground duels as they progressed on penalties.
Then came his crowning moment of the tournament on Tuesday, as he recovered from conceding a first-half penalty to play a key role in Egypt going two up against Argentina.
Hassan cruised past the Argentina defenders on the right wing before laying the ball to Mo Salah, who assisted Mostafa Zico to make it 2-0 in the 58th minute, but the goal was soon ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
There was no stopping Hassan from making an impact just nine minutes later, though, as he led another counter and eventually cut the ball back to Zico, who legitimately made it 2-0.
Hassan was soon forced off with an injury as Egypt went on to lose 3-2 without his attacking talent, as he ended the game with four successful dribbles, seven ground duels won and two fouls drawn.
How did current Celtic players get on at the World Cup?
Sources have told Football Insider that Celtic are readying a 'huge' signing spree this summer, but they will have to stump up more cash to land Hassan's signature in the coming weeks.
He is not set to partake in any more World Cup games, and the same can be said for all eight Celtic players who went to the tournament.
Hyun-jun Yang's South Korea crashed out in the group stages, similar to Scotland stars Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston and Tunisia's Sebastian Tounekti.
Daizen Maeda bagged for Japan against Benjamin Nygren's Sweden in a Group F clash as both sides went out in the round of 32.
Auston Trusty scored against Turkey before co-hosts USA crashed out in the round of 16, while fellow Hoops defender Alistair Johnston also helped Canada reach the same round.
