Robbie Keane is a leading contender to become the next Hearts manager, and he could use it to audition for the Celtic job.

Keane was in the running to become the next Celtic manager this summer, but the club have decided to stick with Martin O'Neill for at least another season.

The potential appointment of Keane, whose previous spell at Maccabi Tel Aviv sparked protests from Celtic supporters, could be viewed very differently if he enjoys a successful stint at Hearts.

Rangers manager Danny Rohl has agreed a deal to join RB Salzburg, meaning the Glasgow side have acted to bring Hearts boss Derek McInnes in as his successor.

McInnes has laid the foundations for the next Hearts manager to succeed after he nearly guided the Edinburgh club to a first league title since 1960.

Backed by Brighton owner Tony Bloom, and his Jamestown Analytics company, Keane could show the Celtic board why it was a mistake not to hire him.

Keane stepped down as manager of Ferencvaros after 16 months in the role, where he led them to a league title and a domestic cup.

The Irishman, who had a spell at Celtic during his playing career, would have faced a rebuild of the Hoops squad this summer, and may feel there could be more stability on the pitch if he returns next summer.

O'Neill has only signed a one-year contract, meaning Celtic will open up the door to candidates once more next season.

Keane would find it tough to mount another title challenge if he was to move to Hearts, but he would be in the perfect place to prove his credentials to the board and supporters, and could enjoy a successful run in Europe next season with the Jambos.

Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider that a handover could be put in place between O'Neill and Keane next summer, but the fans are currently dictating what the board can and can't do.

What would Robbie Keane have to do first at Hearts?

Keane's first task if he was to move to Hearts would be to ensure the club do not lose any more key players.

Lawrence Shankland has already moved to Rangers, and Hearts need to ensure that forward Claudio Braga does not join him at Ibrox.

Hearts must also sort out the future of midfielder Cammy Devlin whose contract expires at the end of June.

Ensuring there is enough squad depth to compete in the league and in Europe will also be a key factor as to whether Hearts can succeed next season.
