Irish media wrong to slate Celtic star Liam Scales, the stats tell a different story
Irish media have wrongly criticised Celtic's Liam Scales after he did well in the Republic of Ireland's draw with Austria.
Scales has divided opinion at Celtic for several seasons since becoming a first-team regular.
He has retained a regular starting spot in the Hoops' backline under Martin O'Neill, making 10 appearances so far this term.
The 28-year-old earned his 18th Republic of Ireland cap as they were held to a 2-2 Nations League draw by Austria on Thursday.
Irish media have been overcritical and captious in their review of the Celtic defender's display at the Aviva Stadium.
He may not have been a standout for his country, but clearly did better than they believe as he pushes to start more regularly under Heimir Hallgrimsson.
Liam Scales' stats show that he did not 'struggle' against Austria
Scales started on the left of Ireland's back three as they hosted Austria in their third Nations League B fixture of the 2026-27 tournament.
He made 30 accurate passes during the clash, with one successful dribble from as many attempts and the third-most defensive contributions (10) of any player on the pitch.
The 28-year-old produced a fine backline display, with four of five attempted ground duels won and three of five aerial duels won, while he also drew two fouls from the Austrian attack.
According to the Irish Mirror, Scales "struggled at times" throughout the clash, while RTE said his performance "never really ignited, but it was functional."
He deserved more plaudits for an effectively faultless performance from a defensive point of view.
It was clear to see how much of an impact he had on the Ireland side, as they surrendered a two-goal lead after he had been taken off for Liam Kitching.
Celtic could regret Adam Idah decision after latest Ireland performance
Scales' former Celtic teammate, Idah, was key to Ireland earning a point in Dublin just days after his strike against Israel.
The 25-year-old Swansea City striker linked up brilliantly with Troy Parrott to spearhead the Boys in Green attack, providing an assist for his memorable first strike of the evening on Thursday.
He looks to have taken his game to another level this season for the Championship table-toppers, scoring four goals in eight starts so far.
Celtic's decision to let him go last year may well be one they live to regret, especially as big-money signing Kasper Hogh struggles for goals this season.
