Celtic fans have absolutely slammed Sam Johnstone after his disastrous performance in the 3-0 defeat to Rangers on Sunday in the Premier Sports Cup.

The goalkeeper made his second Hoops appearance since moving to Parkhead in the summer transfer window, in the first Old Firm derby of the season.

However, Martin O’Neill’s side were completely outclassed at Ibrox, with Johnstone putting in an awful display.

The 33-year-old looked nervous for large chunks of the game, which played a big factor in the defeat.

As a result, Celtic fans have rushed to X to complain about the performance, with some not wanting to see the goalkeeper play for the club again.

The signing of Johnstone on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer already came with plenty of pessimism.

The goalkeeper has not played regular football for years and is extremely injury-prone.

With Celtic fans hoping to get a new number one who could cement his place in the starting XI for years to come, this signing did not meet expectations.

Now, after a solid debut in the 1-0 victory over St Johnstone last week, the goalkeeper looked terrible against Rangers and was one of the worst players on the pitch.

Therefore, it did not take long for Celtic fans to make their feelings known about his performance.

Celtic board are responsible for goalkeeper woes

It was clear at Celtic for months last season that a new top goalkeeper was needed at the club.

Therefore, as soon as the transfer window opened in the summer, a new keeper should have been lined up at Parkhead.

Yet, this did not happen, and instead Johnstone was brought in the dying hours of the window.

Not only is the former England international not a long-term solution given that he is only on loan, but he will take weeks to be fully match-sharp after spending pre-season out on the sidelines.

Why Celtic’s board did not simply buy a top keeper to solve this issue is baffling, as a better number one may have even kept them in the Champions League this season.

Now, the club must once again try to navigate this issue throughout the campaign as fans hope a true solution will present itself as soon as possible.
