David Moyes ‘keeping an eye’ on Celtic job amid Everton latest: ‘There’s no doubt…’
Everton manager David Moyes is sure to be keeping tabs on the potential managerial vacancy at Celtic next summer.
That is according to former Toffees chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the Bhoys will have to show patience long-term if they want to land the 63-year-old.
The Scot is out of contract on Merseyside next summer, when Celtic boss Martin O’Neill will also see his current deal expire.
However, Wyness is adamant that Moyes remains fully committed to Everton at the moment and will not engage in talks with any other clubs behind the Toffees’ back.
However, links between him and the Celtic job have continued to intensify in recent weeks, after he previously turned out for the Glasgow giants during his playing career.
The veteran boss’ future remains firmly up in the air at the moment, with Everton’s owners, The Friedkin Group, also working to sell the club before next summer.
Celtic board could repair fan relationship with David Moyes move
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Celtic board could potentially repair their relationship with their fans if they could land Moyes as their next boss.
However, the Scottish businessman has warned that Moyes could potentially use the Bhoys’ interest as “leverage” to try and push through a new deal at Everton.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained why Moyes moving back north of the border still should not be ruled out.
“Moyes, as I said at the start, he's very disciplined, and he's very loyal, and so he won't be having talks behind anybody's back with Celtic, I'm sure of that,” he said.
“But he'll keep an eye on it, and he'll be part of the leverage with him and with the Friedkins, and he has an option there; there's no doubt.
“He's been linked with Celtic before, he played for Celtic and look, he's a proud Scotsman and I think if he was to go to Celtic, the next job after that would probably be the Scottish national manager, in my view.”
Celtic not ruling out Martin O’Neill exit
Former Manchester United chief scout recently told Football Insider that O’Neill’s exit from Celtic before the end of the season still cannot be ruled out.
The ex-recruitman man believes that the volatility of the Celtic fans at the moment will ensure that the boss’ dismissal remains a possibility throughout the campaign.
Brown is adamant that O’Neill will have to deal with a fresh spike in pressure in relation to his position every time Celtic lose a game in the coming months.
The 74-year-old opted against stepping down from his role during the recent international break, but could still be shown the door sooner rather than later.
