Celtic fans have heavily criticised Dane Murray on social media after his moment of madness in their friendly defeat to Sporting CP.

Martin O'Neill will know he has to make some real changes to his squad this summer after Celtic's eye-opening second pre-season clash.

His side were beaten 4-1 by Portuguese giants Sporting CP at the Estadio do Algarve on Tuesday evening after conceding three goals in seven minutes towards the end of the game.

New signing Camilo Duran had equalised just after the hour mark on his debut for the club, but Hoops fans made their feelings clear with more chants against the board after the loss.

Sporting's second goal to put them back ahead came just three minutes after Duran's leveller, with academy graduate defender Murray at fault alongside Ross Doohan.

The centre-back's mistake was indicative of the work that the club need to do in the transfer market this summer, with Celtic's supporters piling in to criticise Murray and demand that he be sold.

Celtic fans blast Dane Murray after Sporting flashpoint

Murray emerged through Celtic's youth ranks to make his senior debut in July 2021, and he has gone on to feature 20 times for the first team amid a loan spell with Queen's Park.

He made 16 appearances throughout last season, with just four starts in the Premiership as he faces an uncertain future this summer.

The 23-year-old was involved in a mix-up at the back with second-choice goalkeeper Doohan against Sporting, as his pass sold the stopper short and his clearance rebounded off the defender and into an opposition player's path to score.

Celtic fans have made it clear, via X, that they are done with seeing Murray in the first team, as they demand much more investment from the Parkhead hierachy.

One fan wrote: "I swear Dane Murray is involved in a donkey moment every time he plays. People like the idea of Murray - tall, aerial presence etc, but he's garbage."

While another said: "Not usually one for slaughtering players, but Dane Murray, deary me. Won a competition comes to mind. If the second goal was played in a competitive fixture he would be investigated for match fixing letting that goal in."

And one supporter added: "Murray is so bad. He is a Scottish Championship-level defender at best. Zero composure or technical ability. Should be released."

Martin O’Neill has specific Celtic role planned for Kelechi Iheanacho as agreement nears

What did Martin O'Neill say about transfers after the Sporting clash?

Celtic fans are growing increasingly frustrated at their lack of transfer business, especially as Rangers and Hearts complete several transfers.

Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Kelechi Iheanacho wants to sign a new contract at Celtic, but talks are dragging on, even though they could have exercised a one-year option in his initial deal last month.

O'Neill predictably remained calm and collected when facing the media on Tuesday, and insisted that moves are happening behind the scenes, saying: "We’re trying to come to some sort of agreement with Iheanacho but we are definitely making moves. I am in constant touch with Michael (Nicholson). Shin Yamada has gone on loan and Michael is in the background working away.

“I don’t know about numbers but I am definitely optimistic we will get players in. I think to balance things up we’d have to let a few players go but I’m hoping to be in a position to do that with others coming in. I’m very hopeful."
