New Celtic signing Shim Mheuka has made an encouraging start to his Celtic career and looked to attract particular praise from assistant manager Mark Fotheringham.

The 18-year-old Chelsea loanee made his debut off the bench on Wednesday in a 3-0 win over Aberdeen, with the goals coming from Camilo Duran, Benjamin Nygren and Hyun-jun Yang.

The England youth international is eyed as a future star and will have his first taste of senior football with the Hoops this season after impressing at the youth level.

Mheuka netted 18 goals in 19 Premier League 2 games last season and was named player of the season, while also starring in the UEFA Youth League.

The teenager has already made nine appearances for the senior Chelsea team but it is hoped that he will enjoy far more opportunities with Celtic this season.

The Hoops have let Johnny Kenny and Kelechi Iheanacho leave this summer and while both Kasper Hogh and Duran have arrived, the latter has spent the majority of his minutes out wide.

Mheuka's carer began at Brighton, before he was poached by Chelsea for a fee that eventually stood in the region of £4million.

But while the teenager's huge talent was always apparent, it was only last season that he really exploded into life.

The forward had just one year remaining on his contract and could have left, but he has now signed a new contract until 2031 with the Blues prior to joining Celtic.

Mheuka made his debut against Aberdeen on Wednesday and immediately looked to get into the action, making two recoveries, winning a duel and taking a shot on target in his 15 minutes on the pitch.

In footage captured after the game, Martin O'Neill's assistant, Fotheringham, can be seen waiting for the young striker and enthusiastically hugging him while speaking in his ear.

What Martin O'Neill said about Mheuka

The beginning of a loan is always incredibly important for a young player, and Mheuka appears to have had a very good one.

The teenager will hope to play from the start as Celtic travel to St Mirren on Saturday, with Hogh still injured.

"I think he’s a fine player. I’m not surprised that Chelsea have extended his contract big time because he’s a terrific prospect,” O'Neill said on Wednesday.

"I think he seems to be a really good lad, level-headed, wants to do well for the football club and wanted to come to us as well too, which is very, very encouraging.”
