Celtic are keeping tabs on Liverpool youngster Luke Chambers ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Hoops struggled to bring in left-back competition during the summer transfer window following Marcelo Saracchi's exit.

They ultimately signed 18-year-old Landon Emenalo on loan from Chelsea just days before the window slammed shut.

Emenalo arrived with a knock and remains out injured, with doubts lingering over his suitability for the senior game.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Celtic are keen to further bolster their left-back depth in January as they eye a possible move for Liverpool starlet Chambers.

The 22-year-old spent the second half of last term on loan at Championship club Charlton Athletic, but has not left Merseyside for the new campaign.

Luke Chambers to Celtic could happen in January

Chambers has made four Reds appearances since his senior debut for the club in September 2023.

He has spent time out on loan with Kilmarnock and Wigan Athletic, as well as Charlton, and may well be available on a permanent deal in the new year as he approaches the end of his Liverpool contract next June.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Chambers, surprisingly, was kept at Liverpool in the summer. A lot of people expected him to probably go out on loan, with a number of English Championship clubs interested, but Liverpool decided to keep him around.

"I'm sure Celtic are keeping tabs on Chambers' situation to see if he does become available in January, possibly."

What has O'Neill said about Emenalo's injury?

Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Celtic are considering signing a left-back in January due to concerns over Emenalo.

The 18-year-old has been dealing with a recurring calf problem in the last few months, but is expected to be back fit after the international break.

He is yet to make an appearance in senior football, unlike Chambers, and so Martin O'Neill could look for some added experience to rotate with Kieran Tierney.

Speaking about the 18-year-old's injury upon his arrival, the Celtic boss said: "He's picked up a little injury at this moment, he should be fit in a couple of weeks time."
