Sources: Celtic's pursuit of Gvidas Gineitis depends on one key development

Celtic will make a fresh attempt to sign Torino's Gvidas Gineitis if their asking price is reduced, sources have told Football Insider.

Gineitis emerged as Celtic's top midfield target throughout the summer as they looked to bolster Martin O'Neill's ranks.

They remained keen on his services right up until the transfer deadline at the start of the month and were believed to be close to agreeing a deal with the Serie A club.

The move ultimately fell apart late on, with Celtic's proposals believed to be below Torino's £13million valuation of Gineitis.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, the Hoops will look to sign him again in January if his price tag falls closer to what they are willing to pay.

Gineitis' agent recently admitted that Celtic's coaching staff were keen on signing him, but the move broke down because of disagreements at board level.

Gineitis' price tag may well lower ahead of the new year after he was taken out of the Torino starting eleven for their draw against Bologna on Saturday.

Celtic are likely to remain in the market for a new midfield signing as they battle Rangers for the Premiership title.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Their failure to qualify for the Champions League may have dented Celtic's chances of signing Gineitis, because they would have had more money to spend due to the riches you get for that.

"He's a long-term target for Celtic. I'm sure they'll continue to keep tabs on him but I think if there's anything to happen come January or next summer a lot of it will depend on Torino's stance and their asking price for him."
