Stefan Borson reveals Celtic's termination payment to Martin O'Neill

Martin O'Neill will have a "pretty small" termination payment in his contract, as the Celtic boss reconsiders his future.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the 74-year-old is unlikely to step down.

The Hoops are currently sitting top of the Scottish Premiership table after seven games, but the manager has admitted that he will reflect on his position during the international break.

O'Neill's side have been relegated to the Europa League this season, and are on a run of three straight defeats, including two Old Firm losses to Rangers.

Derek McInnes' tactics appear to have taken a toll on the veteran, with questions now being asked about how much it might cost to sack him instead.

There is no guarantee that O'Neill decides to step down before the campaign resumes, but making the decision for him is unlikely to come at a huge cost.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes that the Hoops would have to spend "a few million" to get rid of the 74-year-old.

"It'll be a few million quid to remove him, but he's on, I would think, a pretty small termination payment," he said.

"That's if he's removed anyway. I'm sure he's that kind of guy, given the scenario in which he was appointed.

"But I don't think he'll walk away to be honest. Is a new manager going to be able to get more out of them? Why would that be?

"Do they need new players? So those are the equations. But, look, it'll be low millions of pounds saved if he walks away."

Who could replace O'Neill at Parkhead?

There is absolutely a possibility that Celtic could resume the 2026-27 campaign without O'Neill in the dugout.

A growing number of supporters are in favour of that, but appointing his replacement will be a lot easier said than done, that's for sure.

Keith Wyness told Football Insider that the Hoops have the money to afford Kieran McKenna, who is currently taking a break from football.

It is also understood that Robbie Keane has already been interviewed for the role, so he could be the first choice if O'Neill decides to step down.
