Celtic fans have called for the club to sign Yann Sommer after the goalkeeper was released by Inter Milan.

The 37-year-old’s departure from the Italian giants was announced on Tuesday after three years at the San Siro.

Celtic have been on the hunt for a new keeper this summer after Kasper Schmeichel departed Parkhead at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Now, many of the Celtic Park faithful have called on the club to make a move for the former Switzerland international to help solve their goalkeeping crisis.

Despite Sommer’s age, he was Inter’s main goalkeeper last season and made 43 appearances in all competitions.

This helped the club lift the Serie A title as well as the Coppa Italia.

Celtic fans call for Yann Sommer to be signed

Sommer was once one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and has made over 800 appearances throughout his professional career.

The 37-year-old has won multiple trophies at clubs such as Basel, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, and is still very capable in the net despite his age.

With Celtic yet to sign a replacement for Schmeichel, many fans have gone to X to call for the club to bring in Sommer.

Martin O’Neill was faced with multiple issues in the net last season, and there is a hope that a player of Sommer’s ability could solve this issue for the foreseeable future.

How good is Sommer?

According to Fotmob on 30 June, Sommer had a solid season in the Serie A during the 2025-26 campaign.

Overall, he boasted a 68.4 per cent save rate, while averaging 1.98 saves, 0.91 goals conceded, -0.07 goals prevented, 0.46 clean sheets and 0.03 errors that led to goals per 90 minutes in the top flight.

If he were to make the switch over to the Scottish Premiership, these stats are likely to improve heavily given the reduced overall quality of the division.

However, the biggest stumbling block for Celtic would likely be Sommer’s wage demands after playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe in recent years.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen who the Hoops will make a move for over the coming weeks as they look to finally solve their goalkeeping issues.
