Celtic fans will love what Chris Sutton had to say about ‘excellent’ Camilo Duran
Celtic are looking to bring in hotshot Camilo Duran to boost their attacking options this summer transfer window.
The Qarabag striker could soon become the Hoops’ first signing of the summer after impressing both domestically and in the Champions League last season.
Reports have now emerged that Celtic have made progress on a £2.5million deal for Duran ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
The attacker had netted five goals in the Champions League, including one against Newcastle United last season, which saw Chris Sutton praise the Qarabag star.
Overall, he scored 15 times in all competitions for the Azerbaijan club and also picked up 10 assists.
Celtic are in need of a new striker, with no new deal in sight for Kelechi Iheanacho, who is now a free agent.
Chris Sutton: Camilo Duran’s finish was excellent vs Newcastle United
After getting battered 6-1 in their first leg against Newcastle, Qarabag travelled to St James’ Park with a point to prove.
Despite already being essentially knocked out in the Champions League playoff, the Azerbaijan club put up a fight, and only lost 3-2 to the Magpies.
Duran got Qarabag’s first, after he nudged the ball ahead of Dan Burn, before placing it beyond Aaron Ramsdale and into the net.
Commentating on the match for BBC Radio 5 Live, Sutton was quick to praise the goal.
He said: “When do you ever see the home fans supporting the opposition's goal?
“The finish is excellent from Duran. Qarabag have played some OK stuff and have played through Newcastle. Duran had too much pace for Dan Burn but he still had to finish it.”
Therefore, if The Celtic Way’s report is accurate, and the Hoops are closing in on a deal for Duran, this will certainly excite supporters.
If the striker can net goals against Champions League opponents such as Newcastle, there is every chance he will be a huge success in the Scottish Premiership.
What were Duran’s Champions League stats last season?
According to Fotmob on 3 July, Duran had some excellent stats in the Champions League last season.
The striker was averaging 0.60 goals, a 0.41 xG, 2.38 shots, 0.12 assists and 1.19 tackles per 90 minutes.
Therefore, not only could Duran be a huge asset domestically, but he may also be able to guide the club back into the Champions League’s league phase.
However, it remains to be seen if Celtic are able to complete a deal for Duran and finally sign their first player of the summer.
