Grimsby have revealed Leeds snubbed the chance to beat Wigan to the signing of Omar Bogle in the last minutes of the January transfer window.

Grimsby director John Fenty explained that the Yorkshire giants were offered the chance to beat the offer tabled by Wigan for the prolific striker after closely tracking him last month.

But Leeds turned down the opportunity to land Bogle at the eleventh hour and the 24-year-old immediately completed a move to the DW Stadium.

Grimsby have not divulged the fee they will receive for the prolific striker but it has been reported that it could eventually rise to more than £3million depending on add-ons.

The League Two club have revealed for the first time what it took for Bogle to sever his ties with the club he joined in the summer of 2015 from non-league Solihull.

“There was another club, which I now don’t mind revealing as Leeds United, who were tracking the interest in Omar and they had an opportunity, at the last minute on deadline day, to come in and pip what was being offered by Wigan,” said Fenty to the Grimsby Telegraph.

“They weren’t prepared to do that and so that gives me the feeling that the deal we settled on with Wigan was of a good – and fair – value for a player of Omar’s calibre and future potential.”

Fenty’s revelation will further infuriate Leeds fans, who were already miffed that their club did not win the race to land Bogle after being strongly linked with him throughout the January window.

Bogle served notice of his potential on Tuesday night when he marked his full Wigan debut with both of his side’s goals in their 2-2 Championship draw against promotion-chasing Norwich.

Leeds did not answer manager Garry Monk’s calls to sign a new striker in the January but they did land two new wingers on deadline day in Modou Barrow and Alfonso Pedraza, who joined from Swansea and Villarreal on loan respectively.
