Championship: How the relegation zone will look if West Brom are applied maximum points deduction

Championship relegation battlers West Brom would fall into the relegation zone if they were deducted the maximum possible points after being charged with alleged breaches of financial rules.

Reports emerged on Monday claiming that West Brom had been charged with breaching the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules for last season.

The Baggies have officially acknowledged the charge, but deny any wrongdoing, with a potential points deduction looming if they are found guilty.

BBC reporter Dale Johnson has stated that they could be stripped of either two or three points from their current tally because it is only a small alleged breach, yet that would still massively shake up the Championship relegation battle.

James Morrison’s side currently occupy 20th in the second tier with four league games left to play, but Football Insider have looked at how things could change if they receive the harshest possible penalty.

West Brom would drop into relegation zone with three-point deduction

Interim boss Morrison has overseen an upturn in form at the Hawthorns over the last month, with the Baggies currently seven games unbeaten as it stands.

They have picked up more points than any other side in the bottom five over the last five games, but a three-point deduction would seriously harm their survival hopes.

The Championship relegation zone if West Brom are deducted three points

West Brom would drop into 22nd place if they were to be deducted three points this week, with Oxford the biggest benefactors, as they would jump out of the relegation zone into 21st spot.

Portsmouth would move up a place into 20th, and another point away from the bottom three, while Leicester would stay 23rd, but would also move a point closer to safety.

When are West Brom set to find out if they have breached the rules?

Sources have told Football Insider that Morrison is in a strong position to be the next permanent Baggies boss, and his focus will be on steering the club as far away from the bottom three as possible in the next four games.

They clearly face the threat of having points deducted from their current total, but may not actually see the changes made until after the season ends.

That is because West Brom have 14 days to respond to the Club Financial Reporting Unit (CRFU) compliance report that has been issued to them after the alleged breach.

All parties involved then have 28 days from when the compliance report is issued to hold an official hearing, meaning any points deduction might not be confirmed until after the final day of the Championship campaign on 2 May.

If the Baggies are unable to pull away from the relegation zone and found guilty, then there is every chance that the points they are deducted are the ones that see them officially drop into the bottom three and into League One.
