Championship: Supercomputer makes new Ipswich Town promotion prediction after midweek fixtures

Championship promotion hunters Ipswich Town are now in pole position to return to the Premier League ahead of Millwall after their win over Charlton Athletic.

Kieran McKenna’s side squeezed past Charlton with a 2-1 win on Wednesday night as Jaden Philogene netted a second-half penalty.

Greg Docherty gave the Addicks the lead inside the first minute at The Valley before Darnell Furlong equalised ahead of the interval and Philogene went on to bag the winner.

Ipswich now sit second in the Championship behind newly-crowned champions Coventry, with a game in hand on third-placed Millwall.

Opta‘s supercomputer had previously tipped the Lions for automatic promotion, but Ipswich’s latest victory has changed things at the top of the second tier.

Ipswich given 68.5% chance of automatic promotion

Ipswich have now lost just one of their last 12 league games to reach second place, but Millwall, Southampton and Middlesbrough are each still in with a chance of securing automatic promotion.

Millwall emerged with a 3-1 win at Stoke on Tuesday to initially go second, and they are still on the same points as the Tractor Boys, but are much worse off on goal difference.

Opta’s latest promotion predictions have Ipswich as 68.52 per cent likely to win automatic promotion alongside Coventry, with 83.58 expected points.

They are set for a busy summer if promotion is secured, with sources exclusively revealing to Football Insider that Ipswich will target six new signings ahead of a return to the top flight.

Millwall are given a 26.64 per cent chance of finishing second as it stands, while Southampton and Boro are both three points behind and have a respective 3.78 per cent and 1.06 per cent chance.

Who are Opta predicting to be relegated from the Championship?

Leicester’s relegation to League One was confirmed on Tuesday with defeat to Hull, as they joined Sheffield Wednesday in going down with numerous games to spare.

Two clubs are battling to avoid the last spot in the bottom three, with Oxford currently heavily backed to succumb to relegation as they are given a 98.3 per cent chance of playing in the third tier next term.

Charlton are their only competitors, with a slim 1.7 per cent chance to be relegated as they sit six points ahead of the U’s with two games left.
