Channel 5 pundit makes bold claim over Leeds play-off hopes after Burton defeat

By Will Butcher

Chris Iwelumo believes Leeds can still achieve a place in the play-offs this season despite losing to Championship minnows Burton Albion on Saturday.

Garry Monk watched his side suffer a fourth defeat in six games at the Pirelli Stadium, as late goals from Marvin Sordell and Michael Kightly earned a 2-1 win for the Brewers.

Retired striker Iwelumo told Channel 5’s Football on 5: The Championship on Saturday (April 22, 9pm) that the Whites could still finish in the top six despite their recent poor form.

Iwelumo’s prediction comes as a bold claim as Leeds are now priced by bookmakers Bet365, Paddy Power and Betfair at 11/2 to finish in the Championship’s top six, after dropping to seventh place in England’s second tier.

“I think they’ll still make the play-offs. It’s a very different pressure now; they’ve been in the play-offs, the chasing pack has been on them and that was their motivation,” Iwelumo said.

“Now they have to actually inspire and motivate themselves to kick on and chase that pack.”

Kyle Bartley scored a late reply to Burton’s quick-fire double on Saturday but Leeds were unable to capitalise on the defender’s fifth goal of the season.

Leeds have two games to claw their way back into the play-offs, as they play host to Norwich on Saturday at Elland Road before travelling to Wigan in their last league game of 2016-17.

With Fulham now three points above Leeds in sixth and Huddersfield five points ahead in fifth, the Yorkshire giants will have to rely on their rivals’ results.

Former Swansea boss Monk will be hoping his side can make it three wins from three against the Canaries on Saturday, after winning in the league and on penalties in the EFL Cup.

In other Leeds news, former boss Uwe Rosler has also had his say on Leeds’ play-off chances.
