Chelsea have held talks in London with the agents of Fenerbahce defender Attila Szalai, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Champions League holders are in the market for centre-back reinforcements in January despite their incredible defensive record this season.

A Chelsea source has told Football Insider that Szalai has emerged as a top target and discussions have already been held over a potential January deal.

His representatives ROGON met with Blues officials last week to discuss a possible move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are ready to test Fenerbahce's resolve to keep hold of the player in the January transfer window.

Szalai has a contract at the Turkish club that runs until the summer of 2025.

Manager Thomas Tuchel is keen to sign a top centre-back amid doubts over the long-term futures of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva.

Szalai has impressed for club and country during the last 12 months and featured against England during their recent World Cup qualifiers.

He has earned 23 caps for Hungary and played four matches in this season's Europa League.

He played as one of three centre-backs in his country's 1-1 World Cup qualifier draw against England at Wembley last month.

Tuchel has set up Chelsea in a three-man defence in every match they have played this season and the results have been remarkable.

The team top the Premier League with just four goals conceded from 12 matches and have qualified for the Champions League knockout stages.
