Liverpool will struggle to compete with Chelsea in their attempts to sign Romeo Lavia before the closing of the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed that Mauricio Pochettino's side will beat Liverpool to the signature of Lavia amid interest from both sides.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on Friday (28 July) that Chelsea are now plotting a full-scale hijack of Liverpool’s pursuit of Southampton star Lavia.

The Blues have set their sights on a move for the 19-year-old as talks over a deal for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, 21, have hit a stumbling block.

The Merseysiders have also been in talks to lure the midfielder from St Mary’s but are facing competition from Premier League sides including Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City as well as Spanish giants Barcelona.

With a potential move to Liverpool or the Blues on the cards, Agbonlahor believes that Lavia could end up at Stamford Bridge.

“Liverpool will not be able to match Chelsea’s offer,” he told Football Insider.

“Chelsea won’t care about giving a player like Lavia the same wages as Enzo Fernandez.

“Liverpool will not be able to match the Blue’s wage offer as it would likely upset the squad under Jurgen Klopp’s disposal as they wouldn’t be able to give Lavia the same wages as Robertson who has proved himself that the club for many years now.

“I think if Chelsea really want Lavia then they will be the club that signs him.”
