Chelsea at risk of 'ban from Europe' after mega signing completed - Stefan Borson

Chelsea are at very serious risk of being punished for financial breaches, as Xabi Alonso continues to spend this summer.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that, while the risk is very real, the Blues will be open to any sanctions.

With no European qualification in 2025-26, Chelsea head into the new season with an 85 per cent cap on SCR, rather than those in Europe with a 70 per cent cap.

As well as the £117million deal for Morgan Rogers, Alonso has added Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra and Emanuel Emegha to the squad this summer.

Rival supporters have raised questions around how the West London outfit can continue to spend without punishment, but that is exactly what will happen if Chelsea qualify for Europe this term.

More deals are expected to be completed before the transfer window slams shut, and it is believed that the Blues will take the sanctions rather than limit their spending.

Chelsea 'happy to pay the fines' instead of relax spending

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson revealed that the "worst case" for Chelsea would be a one-year ban from Europe, but financial punishments are far more likely.

"It depends on what you call risk. I think they're working on the basis that that if ultimately they fail, some of this Financial Fair Play [FFP],they fail it, right?" he said.

"They'll just take the hit and, ultimately, that could, in the worst case, end up with a ban from Europe for a year. But beyond that, the chances are that it's just financial penalties.

"And that includes the Premier League as well. SCR now is a different scheme to PSR in the way that it's punished.

"It's very hard to think that they would breach SCR so extensively that they would end up with a sporting sanction.

"I think now the likelihood is we're in a new phase of sporting regulation, or Premier League regulation, where very few teams, if any, will ever breach SCR sufficiently to lead to points [deductions].

"So it's financial. And they've shown time and time again that they're happy to pay the fines and just do their business."

Who could Xabi Alonso sacrifice this summer?

There is no doubt that the new manager needs to cut some of the deadwood from his squad, and he has already started to do that.

Alejandro Garnacho has joined Aston Villa on loan in a rather strange deal, joining Andrey Santos and Marc Cucurella through the exit doors.

The likes of Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are expected to leave, and so too are Trevoh Chalobah, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and even Emegha, the new arrival.

Especially for a club only competing in domestic competitions, Chelsea's squad is far too big ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, with plenty of players to send packing before the window closes.
