Frank Lampard to 'explore Mykhailo Mudryk deal' as Coventry line up Chelsea swoop

Coventry City are plotting a move to sign Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan following their return to the Premier League.

Frank Lampard is determiend to strneghten his squad before the start of the new season, and is expected to play a key role in their pursuit of the 25-year-old.

Mudryk is likely to leave Chelsea on loan after his doping ban was cleared by the FA, and having worked with the Coventry boss previously, they could be the ideal destination.

Former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that Chelsea are keen for Mudryk to play regular football with a move to a Premier League club seen as ideal.

Lampard could look to take advantage of his links to Chelsea to beat rivals to a deal, despite the winger's availability placing a number of clubs across Europe on high alert.

The Coventry boss, during his time with Mudryk at Chelsea, previously insisted he would be a "great player" for the Blues but still has a way to go to develop his game.

Could Coventry make a move for Mykhailo Mudryk?

Brown told Football Insider in April that Lampard plans to use his connections at Chelsea to bolster his Coventry squad ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Mudryk has emegered as the latest Chelsea talent to be linked with the Sky Blues, and the opportunity for a season-long loan deal is now something they are keen to explore.

There is no doubting the winger's talent, despite concerns about his end product and fitness, having not played a competitive game since December 2024, but a move could be on the cards.

"Coventry could definiely be a destination for Mudryk," Brown told Football Insider.

"It's something that would make a lot of sense, because Coventry want to strengthen their side, Chelsea want to send Mudryk on loan, and Lampard obviously has those connections.

"He's worked with him before at Chelsea, so he'll know everything there is to know about him, how he works in training, how he responds to coaches, what his best role is, all of that sort of thing.

"So from their point of view, it's ideal, and the player would be given the opportunity to get back to playing football under a manager who he already knows well.

"The only concern for me would be about his fitness, because he's been out of the game for two years, how quickly will he be ready to play regular minutes?

"Coventry need to get quality players in to help them right from the start of the season, not ten games in when they finally get up to full fitness.

"But ultimately, that's a decision that will be made by Lampard and the recruitment team, and if they believe it's worth the gamble then I can see this one being done."

What is Chelsea's plan for Mudryk's future?

Mudryk had been completely out of the thinking in terms of Chelsea's plans for the future, as he was serving a four-year ban for breaching anti-doping rules.

However, that ban has now been overturned following an appeal, coming as a surprise to many, and forcing Chelsea to make a decision about his long-term future.

Brown told Football Insider on 3 August that Chelsea are planning to send Mudryk on loan for the coming season, and plan to evalute his progress when he returns.

He is currently nowhere near ready to make an impact on Xabi Alonso's plans for the upcoming season, with a spell away from Stamford Bridge now seen as his logical next step.

Despite his lack of involvement in recent seasons, and previous concerns about his consistency, the club still regognise that he has the talent to succeed in the Premier League.
