Levi Colwill appears to be closing in on a return to the Chelsea squad following a season-ending injury back in July.

The England international last featured in the Blues' 3-0 win over PSG in the Club World Cup final, even notching an assist for Cole Palmer's second goal, before suffering a cruciate ligament injury.

Liam Rosenior has yet to work with the central defender on the pitch, but with the 23-year-old now returning to the grass, it may not be long before Colwill is back captaining the side to victory.

There is a growing hope that he will feature before the end of the season, having returned to training with his teammates in recent weeks, with Chelsea's injury list getting one name shorter.

Levi Colwill closes in on return to Chelsea squad

Colwill played 43 games across all competitions for the Blues last season, including the Club World Cup, and the team have sorely missed his presence in the centre of defence this term.

Supporters have been waiting patiently for positive news about his potential return, and that excitement is now at an all-time high following his new message on social media.

Taking to Instagram stories (10 March), Colwill posted an image of himself in training alongside Trevoh Chalobah and Liam Delap, alongside the caption: "Back with the boys," with a blue heart.

Rosenior will not want to rush Colwill back to first-team duties, with the player having been out for the best part of a year, but he will be welcomed back by his teammates at Cobham Training Centre.

What has Liam Rosenior said about Chelsea's other injuries?

Ahead of facing PSG in the Champions League, Rosenior has issued positive updates on teenage winger Estevao and former Borussia Dortmund star Jamie Gittens.

The Brazilian has returned to the pitch, but is not yet ready for action, frustratingly. Gittens, on the other hand, suffered a hamstring tear at the end of January, so PSG likely comes too soon.

He has had a much more positive scan, though, so it is understood that the duo could return to the squad for the Blues' Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Saturday, 14 March.

Chelsea are currently sitting fifth in the Premier League table, with a very real possibility of securing a top-four spot ahead of next season, which would be quite the achievement in Rosenior's first few months in charge.
