Reece James injury twist, Chelsea teammates are blocking route back
Reece James could struggle to get back into Chelsea's team when he returns from injury.
The Englishman's injury issues are well documented, and there is never truly a good time to face a spell on the sidelines.
However, at Stamford Bridge, his teammates have been taking their chance exceptionally well in his absence.
Xabi Alonso has been hit or miss so far with the Blues, showcasing strong attacking intent, but a real vulnerability at the back.
The former of those was on full display over the weekend, with Chelsea netting five against Bournemouth.
And those in James' place took centre stage throughout the match.
How Chelsea pathway is looking difficult for Reece James
James has been a regular in Chelsea's starting XI when fit, starting three of the four matchday squads he has been part of.
With him being the captain, you may think it is hard to see him dropping out, but Alonso will not be able to ignore what is happening at Stamford Bridge.
In midfield, Jordan Henderson has announced himself at Chelsea with his performance against Bournemouth, scoring twice and assisting once.
Meanwhile, Moises Caicedo's ball-winning abilities in the middle of the pitch making an extremely tough player to drop.
Against Bournemouth, he completed 96 per cent of his passes, made 11 defensive contributions, and won 70 per cent of his 10 ground duels contested, as per FotMob.
He also attempted the joint-most tackles during the match.
Alonso will not mind the selection headache when everyone is fit, but James is certainly not a shoo-in to get an instant return to the starting XI.
Is James' injury serious at Chelsea?
James was in training just 24 hours before Chelsea faced Bournemouth, but unfortunately felt something in that session.
That meant the Englishman had to withdraw from being available, with Alonso later stating they will assess the new injury blow.
If it is set to keep him out for the upcoming fixtures, it hands those such as Henderson the chance to continue to make their mark.
Henderson's two goals and one assist will surely cement his place ahead of facing Everton, and if he performs there, that is another reason for James to find it tough to get back in.
James could also be used at right wing-back, but Pedro Neto has continuously made that position his own, with two goals and one assist in all competitions.
