'They all have very deep pockets' - What Todd Boehly's exit means for Chelsea
Chelsea supporters may be blowing out of proportion what Todd Boehly's departure from Stamford Bridge could mean.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that only the Blues' "expensive debt" could add layers to the current situation.
Excitement is building in West London, and understandably so. But that is why many have been left so baffled by the news of Boehly considering the sale of his shares.
For years, there has been turmoil behind the scenes, admitted by Boehly himself when speaking about the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge in 2024.
Minority stakeholder Mark Walter is also considering a sale, having just sold the LA Lakers, while also seeking extra capital to pay loans down.
Some supporters have come concerned by the situation, but Clearlake Capital's "deep pockets" should squash any signs of panic at the club.
'They all have very deep pockets at Chelsea'
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson is not concerned about Boehly and Walter's imending departures from West London.
"I actually don't think it would be that big a deal either way. Unless the private credit and the situation they have with the expensive debt that they have in place..." he said.
"Unless that is a very major issue for Chelsea and BlueCo as a whole, whether Walter, or whether it's Boehly or whether Clearlake have all of the shares is not that important.
"The only issue really is a more fundamental one about whether Chelsea's business, and it is Chelsea rather than the rest of the entities within BlueCo, whether Chelsea's business could support the debt.
"It's about that entity in the absence of the shareholders wanting to provide sufficient liquidity for the club to operate. Now I assume that they all have very deep pockets, Clearlake and Boehly."
Why does Todd Boehly want to leave?
Right now, Chelsea are certainly not a financial dream. Huge transfer fees, no European football, and a 10th-place Premier League finish last term.
Under Xabi Alonso, though, there is a lot of excitement and expectation, especially after big-money deals for Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix.
Some pundits have even tipped the Blues to challenge for the title, which would be huge, having not won the Premier League since 2016-17.
But finances are a constant theme at Stamford Bridge. And with lots of money going in, but not much coming back out, Boehly is considering his options.
