'This is a surprise' – Transfer expert reveals disbelief over newly-signed Chelsea player
One of Chelsea's summer signings has emerged as a surprise this season following a new Stamford Bridge record.
That is according to experienced former Tottenham, Everton and Aston Villa scout Bryan King, speaking exclusively to Football Insider.
The Blues are in a new era under Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard being heavily backed in the summer window.
Chelsea's recruitment saw a mix of signing younger talent alongside a blend of experienced options.
So far, Chelsea have looked a lot better than they did last season, but there is still quite some time to go.
And one of their more experienced purchases in the summer has been picked out as a positive surprise.
How Jordan Henderson has surprised at Chelsea
The signing of Jordan Henderson piqued a lot of interest at Chelsea and across the Premier League during the summer transfer window.
The former Liverpool midfielder was scrutinised for merely being included in the England World Cup squad, never mind when he features on the pitch.
Additionally, his links with Liverpool certainly didn't help either, with Chelsea and the Merseyside club having an arduous history against each other.
But the 36-year-old midfielder has put all those worries behind him during the early stages of his time at Stamford Bridge, following what occurred over the weekend.
"One signing that seems to have been a surprise as well as positive has been Henderson. I mean, okay, you can say, all right, they only played Bournemouth, but, you know, I mean, 5-1, ain't a bad result, is it?" King told Football Insider.
"No, not at all. And is he the oldest Chelsea player ever to score two goals in a league game, isn't he?"
King is correct with his stat; Henderson is now the oldest Chelsea player ever to net a Premier League brace.
Henderson is exactly what Chelsea needed
Henderson may turn out to be the shrewdest business Chelsea has completed, and as King said, he has been a pleasant surprise.
Chelsea's squad was quite inexperienced, and there are still many that require guidance in Alonso's squad.
With Henderson's time in football, including leading Liverpool to Champions League and Premier League glory, there is no better man to help guide them.
Henderson, while he performed well over the weekend, will also have fewer qualms about whether or not he starts.
His experience will have taught him that, at 36 years old, featuring in every fixture is not a realistic outlook.
