This is how much Morgan Rogers will really cost Chelsea - Stefan Borson
Chelsea will end up spending millions more for Morgan Rogers following his big-money move from Aston Villa this summer.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Blues' amortisation bill is "very high" after another major deal.
Villa were simply unable to turn down £116million offer for the England international's signature, with Chelsea blowing Arsenal out of the water in the process.
He joins Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda, and soon Maxence Lacroix, at Stamford Bridge, in what could be a very expensive summer in West London.
The Blues are not without their financial issues, though, especially behind the scenes, given that the club are still searching for a front-of-shirt sponsor.
Todd Boehly and Co. may want to get a deal done soon, with Borson explaining how much the move for Rogers will really cost.
Morgan Rogers will cost Chelsea '£135m'
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson explained the impact of amortisation, and why Chelsea will have paid another £18m by the end of his contract.
"From a footballing profit and loss perspective, their amortisation bill is very high, especially if you buy a player like Morgan Rogers for £117m, plus all the additional costs," he said.
"And you have to remember the total cost of the Rogers deal is probably something like £135m.
"That's the money that's divided over five years. It's a lot. It's £27m-a-year of additional incremental amortisation that's going into the books for this year.
"It's great that they're selling players. If you look at a player like, let's say, Andrey Santos, where you're selling him and he's got a low book value.
"But because he's got a low book value, he's got low amortisation. So you've got a player with low amortisation going out the door, and the player you bring in has got very high amortisation."
What does Chelsea's list of record arrivals look like now?
Before the signing of Rogers, Moises Caicedo topped the list following his £115m arrival from Brighton, followed closely by Enzo Fernandez at £106.5m.
Now, both have been knocked down the pecking order, whether you take Rogers' straight fee, or the one impacted by amortisation.
Even Lacroix is likely to register in the top 15 of Chelsea's all-time highest signings, suggesting that Alonso needs to sacrifice multiple players.
Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Trevoh Chalobah could all be sold in the coming weeks, but the Blues need a miracle when it comes to balancing the books at Stamford Bridge.
