Chelsea 'on a knife edge' financially after '£500m+' loss - Keith Wyness
Chelsea's finances are in a perilous state as Todd Boehly and Mark Walter look to sell their shares in the West London club.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who fully expects Clearlake to buy out the duo and strengthen their grip on the Blues even further.
Boehly and Walter both personally hold a 12.8 per cent stake in the club, while Clearlake's 61.5 per cent stake makes them the current majority owners.
However, Wyness believes that their move to take on a bigger stake is now just a matter of time, and feels that it could be beneficial for Chelsea to have clear directions from one clear owner.
Clearlake owner Behdad Eghbali would then become the one "calling the shots" at Stamford Bridge, but he would also be left with plenty of issues to mop up.
The capital club have made headlines in recent years for their creative methods when it comes to SCR and their spending, and it could be about to catch up to them.
Chelsea ownership have blown over £500m
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Chelsea's current regime have "wasted" at least £500million since their takeover back in 2022.
In that time, the Blues have just two major trophies to their name, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Conference League.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness warned that the club's finances are "on a knife edge" at the start of the 2026-27 campaign.
"Chelsea to me are still on a knife-edge financially, and Clearlake know that," he said.
"I think a case of having Clearlake as one voice may help Chelsea going forward. Eghbali has been pretty quiet, but nevertheless, I think just having one voice, as I've said many, many times on here, having one voice and clear leadership is important for a club.
"Boehly has been outspoken and a lot of the stuff he's said just hasn't come true. They've got a lot of things wrong, and in my view, they've wasted at least £500m, if not more.
"If they miss Europe again this year, they've got a problem. I'll be watching very, very closely, but I do expect Boehly and Walter to both sell out and Eghbali and Clear Lake to be the ones that start calling the shots."
Chelsea ready to accept Pedro Neto offer
Football Insider revealed on Sunday that Chelsea are ready to accept an offer to sell winger Pedro Neto ahead of the upcoming 1 September transfer deadline.
Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal are pushing to sign the Portuguese star, and are currently leading the race ahead of the trio of Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City.
While Chelsea aren't actively looking to sell the wideman, the growing levels of interest are making them pay serious attention to a possible sale.
Neto notched 11 goal involvements in the Premier League last term, and became a key part of the project at Stamford Bridge.
