'We'll come back and buy in May' - Stefan Borson baffled by latest Alejandro Garnacho twist

Alejandro Garnacho continues to earn surprising moves across the Premier League despite struggling yet again for Chelsea.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that it would have been baffling to see Aston Villa sign the winger permanently this summer.

Despite notching eight goals and four assists in 43 games last term, just one of these goals came in the Premier League, with fans quickly falling out of love with the Argentine.

This came after he was effectively booted out of Old Trafford by Ruben Amorim after the player criticised his tactics during the 2024-25 campaign.

Neither, of course, would have the final laugh, with Amorim being sacked just months after Garnacho's departure. Now, the player keeps getting interesting moves.

The 22-year-old has shown very little to suggest why so many managers want to work with him, which is exactly why Borson would have questioned Villa had they splashed out on a permanent deal.

Chelsea making profit on Alejandro Garnacho would be 'strange'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson has questioned how Garnacho keeps getting picked up by new teams, even if only on loan.

"If they'd have laid the money out and said, 'We'll buy, and come back in May, and pay £40m', giving Chelsea all of the money back, I think that would have looked a bit stranger," he said.

"In that scenario, you'd have been thinking, 'Here's a player that's had problems now at two clubs and, yet, somehow they make their money back.

"Actually, from an accounting perspective, they'd make a small profit. You'd be thinking, 'That's a bit strange, isn't it?'

"But in this scenario, I think it's a good deal for Villa because, if you can create yourself three options or close to three options, that can make a lot of sense."

What has Unai Emery said about new Aston Villa signing?

Unai Emery has made a point about commenting on Garnacho's arrival, which in itself isn't much of an interesting thing at Villa Park.

However, Villa did not release any quotes about Johan Manzambi or Joao Gomes, both of whom are massively exciting deals for the Villans.

Upon Garnacho's arrival, the boss said: “We are delighted with Alejandro. He is so talented, young and he showed us his wish to help our project. We are really happy.”

It certainly suggests that Emery will work closely with the 22-year-old, and that might be exactly what he needs to become the player he's capable of being.
