Leeds United have received an important fitness boost as manager Thomas Christiansen confirmed that defensive pairing Matthew Pennington and Liam Cooper could feature in the next league match.
Both players missed the 1-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Millwall on the weekend with Cooper suffering from a back injury and Pennington out of contention due to an ankle problem.
New recruit Pennington, 22, has been unavailable since in the opening fixture of the Championship campaign where Leeds came away with a 3-2 victory against newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers.
Cooper, 26, has captained the side this season and the central defender has helped Leeds achieve five clean sheets in the opening seven league matches.
As quoted in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds boss Christiansen revealed that Pennington is “very close” to a return with the first-team whilst Cooper “will be okay” for the upcoming clash against Ipswich Town on the weekend.
Despite suffering their first defeat of the Championship campaign, the Yorkshire remain top of the league table on goal difference.
Although both defenders are likely to feature against Ipswich at Elland Road on Saturday, they still could potentially miss out on the midweek Carabao Cup clash against Premier League side Burnley.
In other Leeds United news, Alvin Martin has made an astonishing claim about Christiansen’s team that fans will love.
