Paul Robinson has claimed Chelsea may not be able to hand Cole Palmer a new contract due to their dire financial situation - as new details emerge today on talks getting underway.

The former England and Tottenham goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 21-year-old is the Blues' "best player" following his arrival last summer (2023).

Palmer has notched 14 goals and 12 assists in 34 appearances since joining Chelsea for a reported initial fee of £40million.

He signed a contract running until June 2030, but Football Insider revealed last week (18 March) that the Londoners are ready to give the England international a big-money new contract just six months into his time at the club.

The latest news from sources on Monday is that talks are expected to get underway soon over a deal.

The midfield sensation is not currently in the top bracket of earners at Stamford Bridge and is already being monitored by top-six English sides and elite European clubs.

Palmer already 'best player' at Chelsea, says pundit

Chelsea are expected to hold a summer fire sale to balance the books this summer as they vie to comply with Premier League rules after two consecutive seasons of heavy losses.

Robinson suggested the penny-pinching could see talks with Palmer collapse.

He told Football Insider: “I think he’s the best player Chelsea have.

“He’s gone from an academy prospect and bit-part player at Man City to a mainstay in a Chelsea side who have underperformed this season.

“I struggle to see them giving him a new deal because of the Financial Fair Play situation and the rules they have to abide by.

“He’s only just signed for the club and he’s on a long-term contract.

“Chelsea have handed out three or four new deals already this season, and that will add to the wage bill.

“Absolutely, they should tie him down for as long as they can - but on the financial side, they’ll have to be careful.”
